The Importance of Nutrition During Cancer and BMT Recovery

When we talk about cancer treatment or bone marrow transplant (BMT) recovery, the first thing that comes to mind is medicines, procedures, and follow-up care. But one factor that often goes unnoticed, and yet makes a huge difference, is nutrition.
For many patients, eating well during treatment feels like a challenge. Loss of appetite, taste changes, nausea, or just the feeling of being too tired to eat are very common. Still, what you eat can directly influence how your body heals and how strong you feel during recovery.

From my experience, patients who focus on a balanced diet are able to regain energy faster, handle side effects better, and feel more confident in their recovery journey. Some simple steps that help include:

  • Adding protein-rich foods like eggs, lentils, fish, or chicken to support tissue repair.
  • Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables for essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
  • Staying hydrated with water, soups, and fresh juices.
  • Choosing small, frequent meals to reduce nausea and make food easier to manage.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Every patient’s body is different, which is why personalised nutrition advice matters. But one thing is clear, nutrition is not just food on a plate, it is a part of the treatment itself.
