Decision Making for BMT:
Our daughter B V Sowjanya aged 22 years completed her B Tech in Computer Science, belonged to Hyderabad city. She used to get fever in the months of Aug – Sep 2017. Our family doctor checked her and gave medicines. One day we went for normal eye testing at Vasan Eye Care, looking pale. We got the blood test and the reports showed abnormal with Hb-WBC, platelets all were very low. We immediately admitted her in one of the corporate hospital in Nizampet with the advice of our family doctor. There she was treated under Dr V Chandra Sekhar. Some blood transfusions are done, fortunately during that time of Dr S K Gupta visited hospital to give a lecture. And my treating doctor requested to see Sowjanya for her blood problem. As her blood counts are very low(Hb 2.0,Platelets-10,000,WBC- around 1000).Dr S K Gupta sir explained and gave reasons for the sudden drop of blood counts. Here we came to know a word called “Stem Cells” which is the most important word throughout our journey in the Holistic Hospital, in the midst of main doctor, duty doctors, nurses, Dr S K Gupta sir explained about BMT(Stem cell Transplantation). After thinking for several times finally we approached to American Oncology Institute hospital. He told that he treat my daughter as his daughter. This is enough to build my confidence level and then onwards there is no second opinion in my mind. Even though I got a call from my relatives & well wishers to take her to other old, big corporate. He did few blood tests and bone marrow examination and told us that she is suffering from Severe Aplastic Anemia. Meeting Dr S K Gupta was very important turning point in her and our life. We met Dr S K Gupta sir 2nd time in his cabin and my confidence doubled. Even though he is a Gold Medalist and working in such a big hospital, his relation with the patient and with their family members is very nice. I became his ardent fan. First of all he is down-to -earth man. He gave a sketch of whole treatment and so many times he counseled our family members with his inspired talk. My 3rd brother-in-law,my 2nd brother and my two co-brothers , my wife’s own sisters attended for counseling and very satisfied with the Doctor saab preparation for BMT. By this way he is slowly preparing the “field”. They all liked his personality , approach towards us. They got cent percent confidence on him. Family member’s confidence further improved my mental status. Every time we listened his talks paying good attention and got things from it. His way of explaining on the white paper showed his lecturing capacity and power. Very easily we can understand things with his type of explanation. He told in vey simple language about BMT even multiple times to my relatives who visited his chamber and after several meetings finally with his kind advise and excellent pre planning we make a decision for BMT. Sowjanya is well prepared for this with the help of OPD.
Regarding her only brother, who was live donor for stem cells: Mother’s Worry
Here one more important point I want to say. As the donor for this process is my son Mr Chaitanya 26yrs. We worried about his future health problems. He may feel general weakness after donating stem cells. Before giving his blood counts are excellent(Hb-15.4,Platelet count-276L,WBC-7000). After donating we thought that our daughter similar low count happened to my boy. Doctor saab told that out of so many stem cells he got they are going to transfuse a very few cells and he also told that this type of technology throughout the world form so many years. Regarding donor they got positive news only so many times our chaitanya met Dr S K Gupta Ji. After doing CBC and required tests he was selected as donor. After taking one week complete rest he went to his office as usually. Regularly Dr S K Gupta sir asking about his health status whenever we are coming for OPD. This shows his love and concentration with the donor also. As the world is becoming very fast and busy.I am not observed this type of relationship any where. That is why Dr S K Gupta sir entirely occupied my heart.
Side Effects of BMT:
She was admitted on 18/01/2018. Her brother stem cells were collected & transfused to her in BMT room only on 29/1/2018 .There was blood group mismatch was there. Sowjanya blood group was B +ve and her brother A +ve. But Dr Gupta sir told as long as there is full HLA Match we should not bother about blood group mismatch. When sowjanya is undergoing BMT. She faced some side effects also. They are like dizziness, vomiting sensation, slight fever and hair loss. They are not such a big issues, but we understood that they will happen. Likewise whenever she faced such problems she was given proper medicine and treated under doctors care. We crossed this type of hurdles and happily and safely we completed the task. There were no serious side effects as mentioned by Google doctor. She was in hospital for around 30 days and we never felt that we are away from home. As so many medicines were injected into her body and some Chemo’s are given even though it is non-cancer, she got some side effects listed above. After BMT we admitted in the ward for treatment and got side effects(one or two times) and rectified them with the help of some medicines.
Advice to Others: Do not neglect normal fever and other problems. It is better to consult doctor as early as possible. Particularly a problem like this we should approach Hematologist with in no time. This will reduce our financial burden also. Thanks to every one who helped me in this journey.
Some other important points observed during my stay and OPD:
We all know that human relations play an important role in our day to day life. And latest blood replacements done here. When our daughter is in BMT once I saw Dr S K Gupta Ji in the corridor and greeted him with one ‘Namaskar’. He approached towards me and put his hand on my shoulders and asked about my boy’s health(donor) and talked about Sowjanya’s recovery and my wife’s mental status and worries…My shift duties…Financial issues… general topics regarding human nature and tendencies. How it is possible for a busy doctor and that to in a big hospital like this to spare time to talk with the patients father like me. I was totally astonished and stunned after this incident for this strong human feelings. This may be one of the reasons that he got succeed in his profession. If I am in some other hospital I may not get this type of felicitation here I got. Thank God for showing me the way and sending me to citizens Hemato. This is very plus and positive point in our family’s life journey.
As the hospital treatment cost is looking after by some other department if Gupta Ji likes our approach and behaviour he will help us in this issue also. Generally doctors won’t come on this area. But Gupta Ji helping nature is unlimited. He will recommended us and try his level best to minimize our hospital expenses. I am very grateful to his kind act showed on me when the time of passing my bill.
He used to participate in social activities…. camps…So many organizations used to invite him. Due to my luck… I was happened to participate in one such activity where the doctor Gupta saab gave seminar showing slides and activate people like anything. And attending this type of seminars boost us for donation and gaining knowledge regarding blood history. I am thinking now I have to arrange one seminar like this in near future.
Finally I want to share an important point. Recent OPD visits he asked the meaning of my daughter Sowjanya’s name. I told it means good… tender to feelings and also told sensitive to pain… In Sowjanya’s case when bone marrow test he ordered an ointment to withstand pain with utmost care he treated her. When the time of endoscopy also he waited for the anesthetist to attend her. I don’t know how he got the meaning of her name. He studied her mental status right from the beginning and gave treatment according to that. Studying a patient physically and mentally is very important. This Dr S K Gupta Ji knows very well. He got this art in his blood. We are very lucky for this.
